2 Chronicles 7:1-3
New International Version (NIV)
7 When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. 2 The priests could not enter the temple of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled it. 3 When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying,
“He is good;
his love endures forever.”
We often look at the amazing moves of God that took place in the Old Testament, and think that God doesn’t move like that today. But God wants his fire and glory to fall today. We will look at what took place in Solomon’s time and apply those principles to our own time, and also take a brief look at Romans 12. But the first thing we must understand is that prayer is God’s spiritual cellphone given to men to call heaven, with unlimited minutes!
When Solomon finished praying —- Prayer is the jump start to any revival, any move of God, or any person being saved. Prayer is the bridge God has created between Heaven and Earth. God can move without our prayers. God is not limited by our prayers. But prayer is the vehicle God has chosen to move heaven to the earth. Heavenly convoys traveling to Misawa Japan travel down the highway known as intercession. The most amazing thing about this move of the Spirit was that it was attached to prayer. Fire only fell to consume the sacrifices after Solomon prayed.
* Only after we pray does God send down fire from heaven*
fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple —- God’s presence is not a spark to light up a grill. It is not a small blaze that lights up a fire pit. God’s fire is all-consuming. When His power falls, the sacrifices will not remain. The question is do we want lives that are really consumed by God. The cost is—-no going back.
A sacrifice that is burned to ashes can never return to its original state. We want God’s presence, his blessings, his hand, but do we want to be consumed by His fire? Do we want our desires, our hopes, our dreams and ambitions burned away until nothing is left except what God wants? Do we want the attitudes, offenses and sins we hold to be completely burned away. That is the price of glory. If we are the sacrifices, only after we are prepared to be consumed will God’s glory come among us.
and the glory of the Lord filled the temple —
After we pay the price of being sacrifices and after we surrender to our own ambitions and allow ourselves to be consumed with the things of God, the glory of God will completely saturate this church, and our lives. How will we truly know that God has moved, though? How will we truly know that his fire has consumed our entire being? This will happen when every person begins to lead a life of worship. Be the sacrifice that is consumed by God’s will.
they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying,
“He is good;
his love endures forever.”
The people gave thanks for the fire. They told the Lord that his love was good and that it endured forever after their sacrifices were completely burned and destroyed by God’s fire. The idea in the New Testament about Christians being new creatures a radical one. In God’s presence, our old ideas, old attitudes, old motivations will all burn to ashes. The old man has burned to ashes, so he couldn’t come back if he tried! Why? Because a living sacrifice can never return to its old existence after having been completely burned by fire.
[ A Living Sacrifice ] Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Without being consumed with the will of God and the things of God, are we really being living sacrifices? Only by having our will and wants completely destroyed, burned and wrecked by God’s intentions for our lives can we offer God true and proper worship. Amen.
Prayer to Burn Away: Father, consume us with your presence. Let us be living sacrifices. Burn away every sin, iniquity, transgression, attitude and mindset that is not like you. Consume us until our old nature is ash, and only our faith in Christ rises from the ashes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
